The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde’s only novel, is now on the National Curriculum as an A-Level text for study, but in 1895 at Oscar Wilde’s trial for homosexual offences it was described as ‘immoral and obscene’ and ‘calculated to encourage unnatural vice’. Merlin Holland, Oscar Wilde’s grandson, looks at the scandal caused by its publication 125 years ago on 20 June and how it helped to put his grandfather behind bars.
