I’ll sing of home and love and work
Of Magna Carta and Dunkirk
And Christmas bells and charity and pride
London, December 1940: the bombs rain down in the Blitz, and Britain faces up to Christmas under fire.
In his Mayfair flat, Noël Coward uses his latest creation, Madam Arcati, the visionary medium, to summon up voices that tell of the enduring spirit of Christmas through the ages.
The show will feature music from Coward including London Pride, Don’t Let’s Be Beastly to the Germans and Would You Please Oblige Us With a Bren Gun, and other songs from the blitz era. As well as more seasonal fare, and poetry from writers as diverse as Ben Jonson, Thomas Hardy, Walter de la Mare and Dylan Thomas.
There are powerful prose pieces from the Civil War and from the First World War, from Blitz newsreels and from domestic accounts of the war, from the United States and across the globe. All mixed with the Master’s wit and humour, and a large helping of Christmas spirit!
Starring Stefan Bednarczyk, Issy van Randwyck and Charlotte Wakefield, this promises to be a celebration of Christmas even the Luftwaffe can’t destroy!
